McHugh passed away on Valentine's Day.
Former Winchester Police Chief John "Jack" McHugh died on Valentine's Day Thursday at his home. McHugh, 84, served as Winchester Police chief from 1976 until his retirement in April 1989. He spent four decades with the local police department, and also served in the Army from 1946 to 1948. Police Chief Recalls His Boss, Friend Current Police Chief Kenneth Albertelli, who worked about 17 years with McHugh, said McHugh was a lieutenant when he joined the force in 1972. "He was a very thorough, competent and educated man," Albertelli said of McHugh. "He was a strong voice for the police department. Rex Trailer, a Boston TV icon who had been recovering from pneumonia recently, has died. Trailer hosted “Boomtown,” a children’s show with a Western theme on WBZ-TV from 1956-1974. How did a Western cowboy make his mark in Boston? According to Wikipedia, his corporate overlords gave him a choice of Cleveland or Boston. But he's remembered for more than his cowboy get-up. The Boston Globe wrote in an editorial last year: Kids adored Trailer’s rodeo tricks. But mostly they adored him for his consistent kindness and competence. Trailer was 84. Winchester residents showed their support for Glen Doherty, who was one of the four Americans killed in the Libya attacks on Sept. 11.
The Winchester community showed its support for one of its own today as people lined the streets from Costello Funeral Home to St. Eulalia's Church, where retired Navy SEAL Glen Doherty was honored by friends and family. Residents were dressed in patriotic attire, waving flags and holding passionate signs as their hearts went out to the 42-year-old's family, who mourned their loss. Doherty was killed on Sept. 11 while he was working for a private security company guarding U.S. Ambassador to Libya John Christopher Stevens, who was also killed along with two other Americans at the American consulate in Benghazi. Services will be held in Glen Doherty's hometown church Tuesday and Wednesday.
Funeral arrangements are set for Winchester native Glen Anthony Doherty who was killed in the Libya attacks last week. Family and friends are invited to gather in St. Eulalia Church at 50 Ridge St. from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. in the church on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Doherty's memory to be made online to the Navy SEAL foundation or the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
