Eating organic is good for your health and it's good for the planet. But sometimes, it can be hard to find. Here's where to get the best organic foods in and around Winchester.
Did you know that eating conventional produce increases your risk of pesticide contamination by 30 percent? And chowing down on non-organic chicken and pork increases your risk of exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria by 33 percent? This is all according to a 2012 "Annals of Internal Medicine" report. If you're not already sold on the benefits of eating organic, consider this: organic foods may have more nutrients than their conventionally produced counterparts. Organic broccoli, for example, has higher levels of antioxidants and vitamin C than the traditionally produced variety, found a 2012 "Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture" study. There’s also evidence of more heart-healthy omega-3s in organic poultry and dairy. So …
Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.
Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? On May 31st, Sony will release "After Earth", an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. So, in honor of Earth Day, Patch has teamed up with Sony to present these ideas for making every day Earth Day. How can we make every day Earth Day? Begin with little things. Easy things. Obvious things. Things we take for granted each day, and use and/or abuse because …

Learn about how to engage in healthy, green living with minimal chemical exposure.
Everyone wants to give his or her baby the best possible start in life. To me, that means healthy, green living with minimal chemical exposure, fresh organic food and lots of love. Babies use approximately 6,000 diapers before toilet training. That’s a lot of disposable diapers in the landfill where they take 200-500 years to decompose. Hence the debate over disposable vs. cloth, which takes water, energy and chemicals to wash. Cloth diapers (and now bamboo) have been shown to have a lower environmental impact. With today’s busy families, however, many prefer the convenience of disposables. If so, use chlorine free (from Seventh Generation or Earth’s Best) or hybrid diapers, which have removable inserts that can safely biodegrade when …

When possible, eating organic food is always preferable. But, organic food can be more expensive. What do you do? You go by the “Dirty Dozen” and the “Clean 15” guidelines.
When possible, eating organic food is always preferable. Organic food is grown without chemical pesticides; it may contain more natural antioxidants and nutrients linked to reducing the risk for cancer, stroke, and heart disease; and it tastes more flavorful. But, organic food can be more expensive. What do you do? You go buy the “Dirty Dozen” and the “Clean 15” guidelines developed by the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit organization which uses the power of public information to protect public health and the environment. The Dirty Dozen are the 12 fruits and vegetables most heavily sprayed with pesticides and the ones you should always buy organic. They are, starting with the worst: apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, …

The comment in the article above about the impact to the environment should be expanded on since the only independent study I could find shows NO difference between Cloth and Disposable. I'm sure environmental groups will disagree with this but I would need to see their independent study. http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk "A Government commissioned life cycle assessment (LCA), co-ordinated by …   more ›
