Thursday, Sept. 6 4:09 p.m.: A York Road resident reported Thursday, Sept. 6, that a pile of scrap metal had been stolen from outside his house sometime in the last three days. Wednesday, Sept. 5 3:44 p.m.: A Washington Street resident told police Wednesday, Sept. 5, that a “customer service representative” from a “telemarketing company” had just said inappropriate things to her over the phone. The woman said that she has been receiving the same automated call at least once a week for four years offering her a credit service for outstanding debt. New national study indicates that drug and alcohol use during the school day is a bigger problem than previously thought.
According to a new study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, roughly 17 percent of American high school students engage in smoking, drinking or doing drugs during the school day. The study also said that approximately 86 percent of students indicated that they knew of classmates who abuse drugs or alcohol during the school day. This was the 17th such study conducted by the NCASA. The group interviewed more than 1,000 students ages 12-17, according to an article appearing on Huffington Post. Perhaps more disturbing aspects to the survey included roughly 50 percent of the students indicating there was a place on there campus where students reguarly went to do drugs or drink alcohol. Monday, Aug. 20 10:30 p.m.: A burglary was reported on Thursday, June 28 at a Grove Place residence in the White Horse Commons. The 42-year-old resident said she entered her unlocked home which was locked when she left for work and discovered the screen in the study was pushed in with the window slightly ajar, according to the report. She also told the officers the jewelry from her jewelry box was missing. A print, which appeared to be from a gloved finger, was on the top of the box. The inspector reported pry marks on French doors in the rear, but everything else appeared to be in order. This unit is the last one in the complex on a dead end, and the window faces the woods. Friday, Aug. 17 8:19 a.m.: Two political yard signs were vandalized on a home on Stevens Street. A support for U.S. Rep. Scott Brown was twisted and folded, and a support for State Rep. candidate George Georgountzos sign was ripped off the metal stand and missing, according to reports. The officer said he was unsure if the act was mischief or someone disagreeing with the signs. 11:55 a.m.: A Winchester police officer killed a raccoon that was deemed sick by an Animal Control officer. The raccoon was in the backyard of a Thornberry Road home. Friday, Aug. 10 2:34 p.m.: A 21-year-old Stoneham woman was reported striking a 25-year-old man in the face with a wine glass and kicking a 20-year-old woman in the chin at a gathering in Winchester. The man has injuries to his chest, neck and face from the strike and several punches. A witness told the officer the 21 year old and the man have been in a relationship for three years and recently broke up. The 20-year-old woman of Winchester told officers she fought with the Stoneham woman two times after she was kicked in the face while walking down stairs. The Winchester woman provided threatening texts and Facebook messages both from the woman who assaulted her and her mother. The officer advised her to apply for a harassment protection …

Attorney General Martha Coakley's Office is seeking a $9.7 million fine after an investigation revealed NStar "failed to adequately prepare, respond, and communicate during Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm". The recommended fine breaks down to slightly more than $4 million for NStar’s response to the October 2011 snowstorm and $5.7 million for Tropical Storm Irene, according to a press release. The AGO filed a brief Aug. 7, with the state's Department of Public Utilities, which has the authority to levy the fine. After the Halloween weekend snowstorm knocked out power to thousands of Stoneham households, power was restored to almost all homes by the following Tuesday morning. Tuesday, Aug. 7 3:31 p.m.: A woman reported her cell phone stolen while working at last week’s sports camp at Skillings Field. The instructors piled their bags near the track. The woman said when she returned to her bag, she realized her iPhone was missing and someone had gone through her belongings. No other contents were missing. 4:08 p.m.: A claw foot bathtub was reported stolen from a house on Fairfield Place. The tub was placed outside of the home and used as a holding pond for pet turtles. Friday, Aug. 3 2:49 p.m.: A Nathaniel Road resident reported a purse either lost or stolen. The resident said she placed her purse in her scooter basket, but could not locate it when she arrived at her destination. The house and route was searched, but nothing was found. The purse contained a license, social security card, $100 cash and credit card. 8:08 p.m.: A Camry received a flat tire and damage to its rim after driving over an exposed manhole on Cambridge Street. Police tried to fix the cover, but a Massachusetts Department of Transportation representative said it was the wrong cover for the manhole. The Middlesex County deputy sheriff who was found dead after an early morning, single-car crash in Billerica Wednesday died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, according to the Lowell Sun. The Middlesex County Sheriff’s office has identified the deputy as Edward “Teddy” Dillon III, 27, of Lowell, but has not commented on his cause of death. The Middlesex County District Attorney’s office has only said that his death was not suspicious and no charges are being filed, according to the Sun report. Dillon’s police cruiser, which sustained heavy front-end damage, was found at 4 a.m. on Treble Cove Road in Billerica. He was on duty at the time of the incident. Allene I think you are the one being naive. It's not just Winchester and it's NOT because of money. Yes, more money means easier access, but drugs in schools have been in ALL schools for MANY years. Thirty years ago, my national blue-ribbon, economically and ethnically diverse school had the same. Even goodies like me knew who took drugs, who dealt drugs, and where they were dealt.
