Elite Freestyle Karate Opens in Winchester

Elite Freestyle Karate held their grand opening on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 750 Main St. in Winchester.

Discipline. Confidence. Focus. These are just a few of the words that line the walls of Winchester's newest business: Elite Freestyle Karate. Dozens attended Elite Freestyle Karate's grand opening Saturday afternoon at its new location at 750 Main St. Prior to the Winchester studio opening, Elite Freestyle Karate had locations in Reading and Wilmington. With classes kicking off Tuesday, this dojo is the third in a triangle of karate studios aimed at not just teaching self defense but inspiring “spirit and perseverance ... focusing on the interaction between child, parents and instructor,” explained Sensei JD, one of Elite Freestyle Karate's high-degree black belts and teachers. These ideals were also alluded to by those in attendance. …

What Was the Best Book You Read this Year?

It's that time of year: The internet is littered with best books lists for 2012. But why let critics and publishers get the last word? What was your favorite book this year?

It's December, which is the unofficial "taking stock" month of the Internet. And one of the Internet's favorite year-end topics focuses on the best book of 2012. There are plenty of takes to choose from, like the newsy list, the most-purchased list, the best-as-voted-by-social-media-users list, the traditional list, the contrarian publication's list. We could go on. But now it's time to hear from you. What was the best book you read in 2012? And best, of course, is subjective. It can mean your favorite, the one you thought was crafted best, the one you thought was most thought-provoking. Or fun. Or important. It's up to you. Got a favorite book you read in 2012? Use the comments section below to tell us what it was and why you loved it.

Raising Winchester

Let's Get Ready to Read

There is so much a parent can do to create a foundation for a lifelong love of reading before a child even steps foot into a classroom.

We all know reading aloud to even the youngest child is beneficial, but it goes so much further than most of us realize. I was lucky enough to sit down with a co-author of an insightful book every caregiver should own. Susan Marx and co-author Barbara Kasok created Help Me Get Ready To Read as a practical guide for reading aloud to children from birth to age 5.  Before I met with Marx, a Lexington resident, I thought about my own experience reading aloud with my children and wondered if there was really anything I could do to make it more stimulating and educational. I also thought about the education gap our country is struggling with and how caring parents can help teachers before children even take one step into a classroom. After …

Find Waldo in Winchester

Book Ends is celebrating Waldo's 25th birthday by having a monthlong downtown search for Waldo.

To celebrate his 25th birthday, Waldo will be visiting local businesses in Winchester's Town Center getting to know the perfect hiding spots. If you see the little figure wearing his famous striped red and white shirt and black-rimmed specs while he's checking out one of the 20 businesses across town, you could win a prize from Book Ends. To participate, just swing by the bookstore and grab a “Find Waldo in Winchester” search list with the names of all the participating businesses and collect an “I Found Waldo at _____" card for each Waldo you spot. If you find Waldo figures in at least 16 businesses, you will win a Waldo button and a chance at other giveaways. The grand prize is a complete six-volume set of Waldo books. A drawing will be …

Read Kiddo Read and 'A Wrinkle in Time'

My grandmother would be so pleased to see her timeless book included in the Patch summer reading lists.

Summertime, and the reading is easy...or challenging, depending on our mood, right? I have just submitted my latest YA manuscript to my agent, so I am gearing up for a reading frenzy, a veritable feast of other people’s words. And I love them all, from picture books to the classics. (Right now I am reading The Mysterious Benedict Society aloud to my daughter (age 7) at the urging of my boys (ages 10 and 12) and I am LOVING it.) For myself I am currently reading A Discovery of Witches. When I was a child, summertime meant getting lost in other worlds created by amazing authors, JUST FOR ME. (Right?) This summer, Patch has teamed up with James Patterson to create a reading list to encourage literacy: Read Kiddo Read.  I was very pleased to …
