Elizabeth Warren Wins U.S. Senate Seat in Massachusetts

Democrat Elizabeth Warren beat incumbent candidate Scott Brown in the Massachusetts U.S. Senate race.

Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren has beaten incumbent Republican candidate Scott Brown for a seat on the U.S. Senate, according to the Associated Press. Warren is won by a margin of eight percentage points, 54 percent to 46 percent, making her the first female senator elected in Massachusetts.  An estatic Warren addressed a crowd of hundreds of excited supporters at the Copley Fairmont Plaza hotel in Boston on Tuesday night. "We did what everyone thought was impossible," she said. "We taught a scrappy, first-time candidate how to win." "You took on the powerful Wall Street banks and let them know that you want a Senator out there fighting for the middle class all of the time," she said. "And despite the odds, you elected the first …

Comparison Lets Voters See Brown, Warren’s Stances Side by Side

Check out the side-by-side comparison on how the two candidates stack up on the issues.

The final debate between Sen. Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren was cancelled because of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Some voters viewed the final debate as the last chance to hear from both candidates before making up their minds on who to support. For those voters or for people who want to make sure they are voting for the right person, check out diffen.com for a side-by-side comparison. The website compares the candidates’ stances on many issues, including healthcare, immigration, gay rights, gun control and national security.  The election is Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Don't take the "side-by-side comparison" at face value! It doesn't even mention that Sen.Brown is also a lawyer, and certainly doesn't give any details about bills he voted for or stands he's taken so voters can understand his decisions--like his vote against confirming Elena Kagen for SJC. She was a law professor without the courtroom experience necessary to be an effective judge--a wise …   more ›

Brown Bows Out of Final Senate Debate Because of Sandy

In a statement, Sen. Scott Brown's camp said it was "not appropriate to go forward with a political debate when a disaster strikes."

Republican Sen. Scott Brown won't show up to Tuesday night's final debate with Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren, citing Hurricane Sandy as the reason. "The Scott Brown campaign today announced that out of concern for the hardship faced by people in the path of Hurricane Sandy that he will not be participating in tomorrow's fourth and final debate," said Brown Communication Director Colin Reed. "It is simply not appropriate to go forward with a political debate when a disaster strikes. The focus for all of us before, during and after the storm needs to be on emergency response and disaster relief, not campaigns and politics." Brown and Warren were scheduled to meet Tuesday night in Boston for a live debate moderated by CNN's John King…

Letter: Scott Brown’s Health Care Policy Harmful for Winchester Seniors

Winchester residents 65 and older should be deeply concerned about Republican Scott Brown’s health care policy.

According to the 2010 Census, 3,460 people age 65 and older live in Winchester, and every one of them should be deeply concerned about Republican Scott Brown’s health care policy.  The centerpiece of Brown’s health care policy is working to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the federal health care reform law known as ObamaCare. National health care advocacy organization Community Catalyst Action Fund released a new analysis finding that, if the Affordable Care Act (“ObamaCare”) is repealed, senior citizens in Winchester and across Massachusetts will be saddled with higher costs and fewer benefits. ObamaCare, as it is known, lowers seniors’ Medicare premiums and out-of-pocket costs by an estimated $500 per year.  This means that, if …

Boston Herald Endorses Brown; Warren Also Picks Up Nods

The Boston Herald endorsed Sen. Scott Brown on Wednesday; his Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren has recently had several endorsements as well.

The Boston Herald endorsed Sen. Scott Brown on Wednesday, praising what the newspaper called his "fiscal sanity and bipartisanship." Brown would be more likely than his Democratic foe, the Herald editorial board argued, to stay out of lockstep with their respective party leadership. "Democrats have made much of the fact that, should he win election to a full term, Brown would represent a vote in favor of the current GOP leadership. But Brown at least has a track record of breaking with that same GOP leadership and representing a more moderate voice," wrote the Herald editorial board. "We’re less certain that Elizabeth Warren would challenge Harry Reid & Co. on important issues." Endorsement season is in full swing, as the election looms 13…

Warren Up in Polls, Herald Endorses Brown: Who's Winning?

With Warren holding a small lead in the polls, and Brown getting a key endorsement from the Boston Herald, who do you think has the momentum coming into the final days of the election?

Democrat Elizabeth Warren is up by five points over incumbent Republican Scott Brown in the latest WBUR/MassINC poll of the Massachusetts senate race. That's a near-total reversal of the BUR poll last month, which had Brown up by four on Oct. 9. In fact, Warren has been trending upwards in most recent polling. The New York Times' FiveThirtyEight blog has Warren up by four in an average of recent polls. The blog, which uses advanced statistical modeling akin to baseball sabermetrics (think Moneyball) gives Warren an 89 percent chance of winning the election. But Brown's got some significant energy on his side as well. He's been barnstorming the state with political luminaries like Senator John McCain and today won the Boston herald's …

Franken to Dems: Ignore Your Families, Pound Pavement for Warren [VIDEO]

The SNL alum turned U.S. Senator riled up a highly partisan crowd Friday, Oct. 18 in Lexington, where he and local politicians hit on economic and environmental concerns in support of Elizabeth Warren.

Politics are no laughing matter, but with little more than two weeks remaining before the Nov. 6 elections, Massachusetts Democrats looked for a shot in the arm from the so-called “clown” of the Democratic Party, Al Franken, the former SNL cast member turned U.S. Senator from Minnesota. Franken was in Massachusetts Oct. 19 to support Elizabeth Warren, the U.S. Senate candidate looking to unseat the Scott Brown, the Republican incumbent, in a tight race many politicos expect will have ramifications far beyond the Commonwealth’s borders. And the stumping stopped here in Lexington Friday afternoon, as Franken and U.S. Rep Ed Markey joined a few more familiar faces to address an overflowing Depot building. There were jokes aplenty, for sure, …

John, when I first learned that Franken was elected, I couldn't stop laughing. It tells me that people actually have a sense of humor, to elect a dope like that. What's frightening to me is that while he won, it was only 300 plus votes, which tells me there are even bigger dummies out there that took this guy serious in the first place. If you read between the lines of his stump, even he smells …   more ›

PHOTOS: Scott Brown Lunches

The senator enjoyed lunch in downtown Woburn with some Winchester residents on Monday.

The cars drove through downtown Woburn, many beeping, some waving. A man held his hand out the window, a thumb clearly in the air. "Hey!" yelled Sen. Scott Brown in thanks. Many Winchester residents traveled across the town limits to join the senator at Cousins, a small Woburn restaurant, Monday afternoon. Surrounded by supporters and residents who dropped in for their own lunch, the senator greeted people and had a sandwich. "It's a very important city," Brown said of Winchester's neighbor. "We won it last year, we want to win it again." Although Brown said he has spent a lot of time in Woburn over the years, he had never been to Cousins before. "It was great," he said. "There was a lot of great support here in Woburn." While exiting the …

Who Won Latest Debate: Scott Brown or Elizabeth Warren?

Held in Springfield, this debate focused more on issues, less on personal attacks.

Vital issues core to this race for the U.S. Senate—taxes, healthcare, soaring higher education costs, abortion, insurance coverage of contraception—were the focus of last night's debate between Sen. Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren. And, of course, there were different views of which candidate accomplished the most in this penultimate debate. The final debate between them is scheduled for Oct. 30. Who do you think 'won' last night's debate? Tell us in the comments section below.
