In this quick video, we show you how to claim listings in Patch Places to better promote your business through Winchester Patch
When Winchester Patch launched, editors and freelancers ventured to local businesses to collect information for our directory. Now, Patch Places is a spot where users can find descriptions, hours, accepted payment methods and much more for spots around town. All users can add events taking place at local spots, can rate the business on a scale of one to five stars, and can add a review. But owners of local businesses get extra bonuses when they claim a listing. Owners or managers should search for their business listing and select "claim you listing" in order to make updates to the page. A form will pop up asking for your name, contact information, and proof of ownership. Within a few days, someone from Patch should contact you to verify …

The Chocolate Truffle expects to sell out of chocolate-dipped strawberries for Valentine's Day.
The Chocolate Truffle is bursting with Valentine’s Day goodies and staff have just one message for customers: don’t wait till the last minute. One of their most popular items for Feb. 14 is chocolate-dipped strawberries, offered in white, milk, and dark chocolate. The Chocolate Truffle only offers these at Valentine’s Day, and they sell out every year, so pre-ordering is essential. Those strawberries are extremely perishable, so they’re not in the store yet, but all other chocolate is ready for pickup now. “They don’t need to wait till the last minute because our chocolate is so fresh,” said sales associate Debbie Donovan. The chocolate is locally-made, and what they have in stock now is pretty much what they’ll have for the season. Last …

The new winter market at Mahoney's brings 25 vendors and many eager customers to one of the garden center's huge greenhouses.
Finding fresh, locally grown produce in the winter can be a challenge, but Winchester’s latest market looks to change that. Mahoney’s Winter Market has been open for three weeks. Held in one of the garden center’s massive greenhouses, the winter market includes 25 vendors selling everything from parsnips to alpaca wool gloves. Paul Waxman, Director of Marketing at Mahoney’s, said the opening day of the market went “gangbusters. Way better than we even hoped for. It was huge.” Last Saturday, in the market’s third week, the parking lot was packed and the vendors were selling fast. Many customers picked up free bags of popcorn near the entrance, then made their way to the beginning of the market. There, Mike Smith of Oakdale Farms was doing a…

Landscape companies, who rely on snow plowing to get them through the winter, have been hurting this season.
It was a Friday morning in late January and Cliff Cunningham was driving through the rain on Johnson Road. A year ago that would have been snow and Cunningham would be heading to work. But not this year, this year hasn’t been good for the snow plow business. “It’s been miserable,” concedes Cunningham of Clipco Landscaping. “It balances out over the years. We worked very hard last year. We’re hardly working right now.” According to Acting Department of Public Works Director Jay Gill, Winchester has had 11 inches of snow this season. He said that over the last four years the town has averaged 60 inches of snow and at this time last year, 50.5 inches had already fallen. Fifty-degree days and January rainstorms aren’t too common for those …

Jabberwock Reptiles may feel the effects of a ban on the sale of four types of snakes.
There is a new federal ban that prohibits four kinds of pythons and anacondas that can no longer be sold across state lines, according to the Eagle Tribune. According to Stephen Ayer, owner of Jabberwock Reptiles in Winchester, the ban comes from a problem in Florida, where Burmese pythons are taking over the Everglades. Ayer said that after Hurricane Andrew, snakes escaped from their owners and began breeding in the southern part of the state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service then decided to ban the Burmese python, the yellow anaconda, and the northern and southern African pythons. According to Ayer, those snakes can no longer be imported or sold across state lines. “If you already have the snakes you can keep it,” Ayer said. “But you …

Winchester Animal Clinic now offers a wellness clinic on Tuesdays, when the exam fee is waived for basic vet services.
Veterinary bills can be expensive, but one local animal clinic is trying to help cut costs. Under a new program started this month, Winchester Animal Clinic offers a wellness clinic on Tuesdays, allowing healthy patients to receive basic preventive care without paying the usual $70 exam fee. Services include heartworm tests and vaccines. Heartworm and flea prevention treatments are offered at 10 percent off. While pet owners still have to pay for their pets’ shots, waiving the exam fee means people can spread out the cost of basic veterinary care, said Ashley Chetty, Technician Supervisor. If paying for two shots in one visit is too expensive, for example, they have the option of bringing their cat in for a rabies vaccine one week and a …

Julie Rutkowski runs Feng Shui Services of New England and consults with clients using the principles of feng shui.
“Change 27 things in nine days and you will start to see some change in your life,” said Julie Rutkowski, a Winchester-based certified feng shui consultant and owner of Feng Shui Services of New England. It doesn’t matter what you change – you can rearrange pictures or move furniture around – but Rutkowski says it can make a big difference. She sees those changes in her clients’ lives all the time. Rutkowski does private feng shui consultations for homes and businesses, and also speaks about and teaches classes on feng shui. Feng shui, meaning “wind” and “water” in Chinese, has been practiced for thousands of years. Concepts behind feng shui involve balance and flow of energy throughout the house. The self-serve frozen yogurt shop opened on Saturday and CEO Adam Kessner estimated over 400 customers had been through by mid-afternoon.
There were already 30 people waiting in line when the Winchester branch of Swizzles Frozen Yogurt opened its doors to the public for the first time on Saturday morning, according to CEO Adam Kessner. “You couldn’t have asked for a better day,” one customer said to Kessner, who agreed heartily. The day was a balmy one for January, with highs in the 50s. Families arrived in droves, parking tricycles and strollers outside the front doors and entering a shop already filled with people. By mid-afternoon, Kessner estimated 400 customers had already come through. Manager Lori Smith said the Swizzles opening was eagerly anticipated, noting people had been stopping by the shop for a few weeks now, asking when they were opening. Swizzles is a self-…

Vittorio Ettore's new venture, A Tavola, was recently named among the best new restaurants of 2011 by the Boston Globe Magazine. Now, Ettore looks forward to 2012.
A Tavola had only been open three weeks when it was named one the best new restaurants of 2011 by the Boston Globe Magazine in mid-November. Today, after six weeks of running his newest restaurant, chef Vittorio Ettore reflected back on the restaurant’s beginnings and looked ahead to a new year. Ettore was harried last week during the run up to New Year’s Eve, when he was expecting full houses in both A Tavola and his original restaurant, Bistro 5. On Tuesday, after things had calmed down a bit, Ettore said New Year’s Eve went very well. “We were really busy in both places, but the good kind of busy,” Ettore said, meaning the restaurants were full but not so crowded that customers couldn’t get the level of service he likes to give. Ettore …

While I feel for any industry that depends upon Mother Nature, this is good news for the town---if at this point only 120K of 400K has been spent, even if it tops off at 200K, that's a couple of hundred thousand dollars for the town that can be put away/re-allocated, whatever. Let's make sure this saved money is saved or used wisely!   more ›
