Town Hall was abuzz Wednesday night for the 10th annual Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence (WFEE) Trivia Bee. A few hundred people attended the community event which featured several rounds of trivia played by five 5th grade teams representing the local elementary schools as well as adult teams. There was a tie for first place between Lincoln and Lynch Elementary Schools, so they will be sharing the Trivia Bee Trophy this year. The Lincoln School team was made up of Adrienne Anderson, Joey Charchaflian and Henry Wheaton, while the Lynch School squad consisted of Venkat Rao, Michael Wentworth and Max Lu. Get your thinking caps ready, as the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence's 10th annual Trivia Bee kicks off in early February at Winchester Town Hall, according to a WFEE press statement. The WFEE Trivia Bee is slated for Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, according to the statement. "The (Trivia) Bee is a community tradition that allows you to indulge your passion for minutia while raising money to benefit Winchester’s teachers and students," reads the statement. Seven teams of three people compete in each round, and the winners of each round will advance to the championship round, according to the statement. Winchester's NextDoor Center for the Arts continues its 9 to 5 performances Thursday at 7:30 p.m. This musical, directed by Nancy Curran Willis and designed by Brian Milauskas, is about a sexist boss and feisty office staff star brought to Broadway by Dolly Parton. Although there won't be any appearances by Dolly, the musical is sure to keep you entertained. The NextDoor Theater at 40 Cross St. will donate 20 percent of the ticket purchases from Thursday's show to the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence. Judy Manzo and her team from BookEnds took the ultimate prize at WFEE's annual bee, a fundraiser for Winchester schools.
The Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence (WFEE) held its Ninth annual Trivia Bee recently. Town Hall was filled with tables of trivia buffs, while eager onlookers peered out from the balconies to see who would come away with the ultimate prize, a bee trophy. In the end, it was “The Local Bookies” from BookEnds who nabbed the grand prize. Caren Connelly, Executive Director of WFEE, said she was particularly happy for Judy Manzo, owner of BookEnds. Manzo has played in WFEE’s spelling or trivia bees for 19 years straight, Connelly said, and despite getting to the final round multiple times, Manzo never won the bee until this year. “She was pretty excited,” Connelly said, “so it was perfect to have them win.” Teams of fifth grade …

Heading into school on June 7 Kathryn Manganaro was a little more nervous than usual. There was no test she was worried about. She didn’t forget to do her homework. The second-grader was one of seven students in the Winchester Public Schools that got to be “Principal for a Day.” “We went to a lot of meeting and gave a lot of messages to people,” Manganaro said of her day. Students bought raffles and one winner was chosen at every school. Manganaro was selected to lead Vinson-Owen for the day. Drew Strobeck was principal at Ambrose, Abby Slatalla was in charge at Lincoln, at Lynch the principal was Daniel Addonizio, Darya Smolina held the clipboard at Muraco. Last Saturday under the tent in Cefalo Park, WFEE held its annual fundraiser, the Prom n' Aid.
Everyone came out last Saturday night to Chefalo Park dressed in their best prom attire despite the rain to support the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence. A silent auction, Blackjack tables, dinner catered by Bistro 5 and music from band, Six made Prom 'n Aid a success.

Every spring AuthorFest, sponsored by the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence (WFEE) turns the Winchester schools into a hive of literary experiences. On Thursday, April 14 the schools will welcome 20 published authors and illustrators into their classrooms to engage students in the process that puts ideas into words and drawings. This year marks the return of 17 authors from last year's event. "Some presentations were so well liked that we decided to invite those authors again," said Executive Director of WFEE Caren Connelly. FYI, picture number 12 is of the "Dirt Dogs" (not SIX) who played some great classic rock of their own prior to dinner. SIX (not pictured) played for about 2 hours after the auction (to the delight of the crowd, and probably the dismay of a few of the neighbors looking to turn in early that night).   more ›
