Winchester's $400K Snow Budget Tapped

The Winchester Department of Public Works has spent nearly $450,000 this winter tackling several snowstorms.

The Winchester Department of Public Works has spent nearly $450,000 this winter to clean up after several snowstorms, according to Director Jay Gill. The DPW, which budgeted $400,000 for snow maintenance this winter, had to put in a request with Town Manager Richard Howard and the Finance Committee in late February for an additional $100,000, hoping that that would be enough to get the department through the rest of the season, according to Gill. The Finance Committee approved the request, he added. Prior to Tuesday's snowstorm, the town had spent $449,687 from the snow maintenance budget, according to Gill.  One hundred forty-nine percent has been spent on salaries and overtime ($197,998), 92 percent for expenses ($232,589) and 76 percent…

Winchester's $400K Snow Budget Nearly Gone

Find out how much money remains in the Winchester DPW snow removal budget.

The Winchester Department of Public Works has used up nearly all of its $400,000 snow budget this winter, according to Director Jay Gill. Of the $400,000 allocated for this winter, only about $12,000 remains, or in other words: About 97 percent of the overall snow removal budget has been used, according to Gill. "We spent about $87,000 on plowing operations during the blizzard," Gill said. "This year we've had 22 snow events compared to just 14 last year." In 2012, Winchester DPW returned about $150,000 to the town from their snow budget account thanks in large part to a sparse winter, according to Gill.  Winchester has already received about 43 inches of snow this winter, compared to 17 inches in 2012, according to Gill.
