Thanksgiving football and smelly water.
This is a regular column with items drawn from past editions of the Winchester Star. 1911 Poor Taste Residents have been complaining about the taste of Winchester's water supply. Many have said taht it has a "vegetable" taste. Apparently, the taste is harmless and comes from the running off of the rain water through all the dead leaves on its way to the reservoir. The leaves will be gathered and burned. Also, since the water level of the rservoir is so low, that adds to the taste of decaying vegetation. 1961 President's Mom John F. In 1911, an oil treatment combined with rain caused a number of accidents in Winchester Center.
This is a regular column with items drawn from past editions of the Winchester Star. 1911 “Oil Caused Numerous Accidents” Roads in downtown Winchester were treated with oil, then it rained, making the streets “a terror for automobiles and pedestrians.” The oil became like a “thin Vaseline” and many cars skidded out, including a large Rambler touring car. 1961 “Request More Money for Lynch Jr. High” The Lynch Junior High School Building Committee urged the Board of Selectmen to call a Special Town Meeting to appropriate $11,000 more for the project. 1986 “Center Parking Rules to Allow Space Changes” It used to be that cars could only park in Winchester Center for an hour each day, regardless of the fact if they switched spaces or not. Any trains that don't pay are being stopped. Residents are moving away from the steam trains and are using the electric ones more frequently. This is a regular column with items drawn from past editions of the Winchester Star. 1911 Resident Saved Charles Church, who lived in an apartment along Main Street was smoking in bed. He fell asleep with the lit cigarette, which caught his bedding on fire. Church was able to get to the window of his upstairs apartment and break the glass before fainting due to the smoke. The Winchester Fire Department entered the home and brought him outside, where a local doctor saved his life. Winchester mothers are trying to start the Boy Scouts in town.

Police made no arrests in Winchester, as residents went to Manchester Field to watch the fireworks. It was also the hottest July 4 in Winchester's history with temperatures averaging 110 degrees. But the heatwave ended with a major thunderstorm. Lightning also struck a flag pole in the Common, splitting it in half. A house was also struck, breaking its water main.
