Committee Evaluates Education Program Cuts with WHS Project Costs

“Any of these educational program cuts will have an impact on what is possible in our future High School," said William McAlduff, Superintendent of Schools.

This is the second in a series of updates from the Education Facilities Planning and Building Committee on the High School Feasibility Study. Here is the first update. The Education Facilities Planning and Building Committee (EFPBC) evaluated high school alternatives according to education program and project cost tradeoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 17.  In the first of a series of sessions intended to help the EFPBC narrow down preferred alternatives being considered, Project Architects SMMA presented four construction alternatives for enclosing three different programs (A, B, and C) each, utilizing site diagrams, education program space considerations and project costs.   The “A” series represented the full education program, the “B” series …

I would have thought that Newton North is a shining example of "what not to do", not a signal of what is possible. The cost of the high school put the town of Newton under huge budgetary pressures, caused subsequent override votes (for other projects) to fail, and ultimately tightened the guidelines for state funding of school projects for the entire state. School Committee Tables Redistricting Vote

The Winchester School Committee will meet Tuesday, June 19 to discuss any redistricting plan updates.

The Winchester School Committee tabled the proposed redistricting plan per Superintendent William McAlduff’s recommendation. Although McAlduff said he believed the plan was on track when he proposed it May 22, with the community suggestions, he recommended both him and the committee take more time to assess the feedback. “It appears to me to review all the feedback, questions and concerns in a thoughtful and responsive manner simply requires more time,” he explained. School Committee Member Cindy Bohne agreed and made the motion to table the redistricting item till the next regular meeting on June 26. Bohne said the committee needs to take the proper amount of time to be thoughtful and deliberate with this issue even if it requires …

All of the schools are desirable, which is not surprising because they are all excellent. The focus of the redistricting needs to be on reducing overcrowding so that 1) every school's enrollment is as close to its ideal capacity (not its "emergency capacity") as possible and 2) any overcrowding still remaining is shared more or less equally across town (rather than one or two schools bearing the …   more ›
