This is the second in a series of updates from the Education Facilities Planning and Building Committee on the High School Feasibility Study. Here is the first update. The Education Facilities Planning and Building Committee (EFPBC) evaluated high school alternatives according to education program and project cost tradeoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 17. In the first of a series of sessions intended to help the EFPBC narrow down preferred alternatives being considered, Project Architects SMMA presented four construction alternatives for enclosing three different programs (A, B, and C) each, utilizing site diagrams, education program space considerations and project costs. The next Winchester School Committee meeting will be in the high school auditorium on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The Winchester School Committee moved its Thursday meeting from the Lynch School library to the Winchester High School auditorium. The meeting will still be at 7:30 p.m. If you aren't able to attend, you can view it live from WinCam on Verizon 38 or Comcast 22. The School Committee will continue the discussion of both the revised Redistricting Advisory Committee maps as well as the alternative plans. The alternative plans consist of: Two Letters to the Editor were submitted this week in favor of the ALO plan. Mark Ockerbloom, who was born and raised in Winchester, is now the lead news anchor on Fox 25.
No matter what Mark Ockerbloom does he always seems to end up back in Winchester. The Fox 25 lead news anchor for the 10 and 11 p.m. shows returned to his hometown. Ockerbloom, who grew up in Winchester and whose parents still live in town, was invited to speak at the weekly meeting of the Winchester Rotary Club. “Mark and his family are well-known in Winchester,” said Rotary President, Bob Lord. “In some ways this was a homecoming. It was enlightening to see how he went from the public schools to the career he has now.” Mark’s father, Richard, was President of the Boston Globe, while Mark was growing up. I would have thought that Newton North is a shining example of "what not to do", not a signal of what is possible. The cost of the high school put the town of Newton under huge budgetary pressures, caused subsequent override votes (for other projects) to fail, and ultimately tightened the guidelines for state funding of school projects for the entire state.
