The Winchester Department of Public Works concentrated their post-blizzard cleanup efforts in the downtown area Monday night into Tuesday morning.
The Winchester Department of Public Works concentrated their cleanup efforts in the downtown area Monday night into Tuesday morning. "Winchester Center is really bad...so we will shut down the downtown area and bring equipment in and concentrate on cleaning up the sidewalks," Gill said on Monday afternoon. No parking was allowed in the downtown area from 10 p.m. Monday through 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to Gill. DPW crews have been working long hours to cleanup up the estimated 30.2 inches of snow that fell in town during the blizzard Friday into Saturday. With the anticipation of Hurricane Sandy hitting Massachusetts early next week, Winchester asks for help from residents.
The Town of Winchester is requesting that residents work with their neighbors to clear storm drains in front of their property and along their roadway. Hurricane Sandy could be bringing heavy rains and high winds. "The Department of Public Works has multiple crews out clearing the storm drains on a daily basis," said LeeAnn Fleming McGahan of the DPW, "However, the trees have been dropping the fall foliage quickly which makes it impossible to clear all drains by Sunday evening." Town leaders are asking residents to check the storm drains, rake leaves away from the drain (not into the drain) and dispose of the leaves and debris in yard waste bins or brown paper leaf bags. Water main flushing of the middle lowwater system will be taking place over the next three to four weeks from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Water main flushing of Winchester's middle lowwater system begins today. The flushing will be taking place over the next three to four weeks from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Water main flushing signs will be posted in the areas to be flushed. The middle low water system consists of streets west of Washington Street, Main Street and Grove Street, and streets east of Cambridge Street. During flushing, residents should refrain from using water for drinking, dishwashing and laundry as some discoloration of water may occur. If you experience discolored water, let the cold water run until it clears. If the problem continues, please call the Water and Sewer Department at 781-721-7109. The Winchester Chamber of Commerce presented a donation to the Department of Public Works for the Peter Van Aken Permanent Street Tree Fund. Director Jay Gill received the donation for the planted trees for the tree fund Sept. 12 at the first Chamber Board of Director meeting of the season. Dot Butler, chair of the Winchester Chamber of Commerce Garden Tour, said the proceeds of the tour are used for Winchester beautification projects.
