The fire was caued by an oil stove exploding. No one was injured in the blast. New planet Rev. Joel Metcalf believed he observed a new planet from his observatory. Whitney, was not violating the law when he went fishing in the North Reservoir. The judge overturned a previous decision against Whitney, as he said that only the town of Winchester could govern fishing in the reservoir, not the state, which initially accused Whitney. 1961 Fire at Chapin School A two-alarm fire caused more than $25,000 worth of damage to the east wing of the old Chapin School building on Swanton Street. This is a regular column with items drawn from past editions of the Winchester Star. 1911 Cooking Classes Any female resident of the town between the ages of 14 and 21 could take cooking classes at school, whether they were still attending classes or not. 1961 Police Chase A 23-year-old Billerica man was arrested and sentenced to six months in jail when he lead Winchester Police on a chase along Cambridge Street and into Woburn. The driver, John Hunt, fled because he had an expired license and was driving a stolen car. Police eventually caught Hunt as he lost control near Woburn Four Corners as he tried to turn onto Lexington Street. The car crashed into a tree. The black bass has been killing the smaller fish, which would then sink to the bottom of the water, decompose and taint the water. The Water Department had been raking out all the dead fish, but have been unable to get them all. It was decided that fisherman should be allowed to catch the bass, so that they can't ruin the water. 1961 More School The Winchester School Committee voted to extend the school day by 10 minutes at the junior school and the high school. Residents got to witness the first airplane fly over Winchester this week in 1911.

On June 17, Winchester residents saw the first plane fly overhead. Earl Ovington of Waltham flew over the Mystic Lakes and as far north as Lowell before turning around. Hurricane Winchester was hit by a hurricane that brought hail, rain and heavy wind. The worst damage was done to a home on Thompson Street, which was struck by lightning. 1961 Property Destroyed Winchester Police Chief, Joseph Derro, issued a warning to the vandals who destroyed the parking meters along the Common. Winchester residents met with the Board of Health after signing a petition complaining about the smell coming from the Beggs & Cobb's tannery on Swanton Street. The smell stems from a sewage problem.
