Parents Outraged with Redistricting Plan

Winchester parents provided Patch with a letter they submitted to the School Committee outlining reasons why they are against the proposed redistricting plan.

The following letter was sent to the Winchester School Committee in regards to the proposed redistricting plan. Sue and Stephen Kim of Winchester provided this letter to Winchester Patch. Dear Members of the School Committee, As parents of a former and current Muraco student who live in the Cedar-Tremont- Swanton-Winter St neighborhood, we are truly outraged with the proposed redistricting plan. We appreciate the difficulty the committee faced in determining which neighborhoods would be moved to different schools, but the recommendation does not appear to take our neighborhood’s strong arguments for safety and walkability into consideration as evidenced by the outcome and the Redistricting Advisory Committee’s (RAC) own report. Parent Outlines Reasons to be Angry with School Committee's Choices

A Winchester parent is shocked with the changes the proposed redistricting plan has put on the communities' families.

My home is redistributed to Lynch Elementary School from Lincoln in the newly proposed redistrubuting plan by Winchester school committee. I was so shocked when I heard this, I cannot even sleep well since then. How could this happen to our community?  You may wonder why I reacted so angrily with a simple redistrubuting plan? Well, let me explain the details of this redistributing story.  First of all, several simple facts:  Just by looking at the final redistributing map, we cannot help thinking why moving our community to this only poorly rated school, however other privileged communities stay untouched and have access to much better school and educational resources?  -Rui Wu of Winchester

First of all I want to say you are very brave. I applaud you for speaking up your conern and standing up for your family. You don't know how to express yourself as beautifully as the politicians do, but you do need use your word wisely in public post. No offense. We are in one Winchester. Some day, your kids will go to the same school with the kids from what you called "poorly rated school". As a…   more ›

Superintendent Proposes Redistricting Map

The superintendent presented his recommendation for the redrawn elementary school boundaries for the 2013-2014 academic year Wednesday night.

Superintendent William McAlduff presented his recommendation for redistricting that would have four major areas of students changing districts to ease increasing enrollment in Winchester. “Since the last elementary school was constructed seven years ago, enrollment has lead to capacity strain at every school,” McAlduff said. “With each elementary school at or over capacity, redistricting has to be done.” Part one of the solution began in 2008 with the reconstruction of Lincoln and Ambrose elementary schools which have two module classrooms each. Twelve classrooms will be added by 2013 when the Vinson-Owen School is finished. Two classrooms will be added to the Lynch School, McAlduff said. “However, construction, reclaim and relocation are …

Sally Ann - no, that is not a fair assumption at all. Two of the most vocal groups at the public meetings are slated to move in 2013 with the current proposal. Speaking out - and speaking out in large numbers - did not seem to make any difference for those areas (I'm referring to the Ambrose "Westland Walkers" and certain parts of the Flats moving from Lynch to V-O)   more ›

Winchester Annual Town Meeting Begins for 2012

The Town Meetings will be held at the Winchester High School every Monday and Thursday, starting May 7.

The annual Winchester Town Meeting began on Monday evening at the Winchester High School auditorium.  There, the finance committee presented the Fiscal Year package for 2013, which will be discussed in much greater detail on Monday, May 7. The Winchester School Committee discussed the need for funds, new district boundaries and special education stabilization. “We think the high school should be the jewel of this town,” Winchester School Committee Chairman Chris Linskey said. The Winchester Planning Board, meanwhile, has an objective to replenish neighborhoods by updating the town zoning bylaws, which were drawn up in the 1950’s. “We are running out of undeveloped land as a source of revenue,” Town Planning Board Chairman Lance Grenzeback …
