Two Winchester High School teachers were nominated by high school graduates entering the University of Chicago.
Winchester High School faculty members David Benedetto and Mark Chase have been nominated for the University of Chicago's Outstanding Educator Award. This distinguished award has existed for more than 30 years. Entering freshmen at the University of Chicago are invited to nominate teachers who have changed them, challenged them or helped them along the path toward intellectual growth. Benedetto and Chase were nominated by Winchester High graduates entering the University of Chicago. Benedetto has taught chemistry and physics at WHS for eight years. Chase has taught history and psychology in the Social Studies Department for six years.

Winchester High School was one of 64 schools across the state to receive this designation.
Winchester High School was designated as a 2012 Commendation School by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. WHS was one of only 64 schools out of all elementary, middle and high schools across the state to receive this designation. “In Massachusetts, we set a high bar for proficiency and hold our students and teachers accountable for results," said Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester. This is the second in a series of updates from the Education Facilities Planning and Building Committee on the High School Feasibility Study. Here is the first update. The Education Facilities Planning and Building Committee (EFPBC) evaluated high school alternatives according to education program and project cost tradeoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 17. In the first of a series of sessions intended to help the EFPBC narrow down preferred alternatives being considered, Project Architects SMMA presented four construction alternatives for enclosing three different programs (A, B, and C) each, utilizing site diagrams, education program space considerations and project costs. Jillian Kinton of Winchester, received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing of Emory University in Atlanta, GA, on Aug. 10. Emory University is known for its demanding academics, outstanding undergraduate experience, highly ranked professional schools and state-of-the-art research facilities. Emory encompasses nine academic divisions as well as the Michael C. Carlos Museum, The Carter Center, the Yerkes National Primate Research Center and Emory Healthcare, Georgia's largest and most comprehensive health care system. Bowdoin College held its annual Sarah and James Bowdoin Day ceremony Sept. 28 to honor those undergraduates who distinguish themselves by excellence in scholarship. Those students who are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Scholars are in the top (highest GPA) 20 percent of each class for the previous academic year. In addition, those scholars who earned a GPA of 4.0 are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Book Award winners. The following Sarah and James Bowdoin Scholars are from Winchester: Catherine Chang, a member of the Bowdoin College Class of 2014. The Winchester School Committee meets tonight to discuss redistricting plans, and Winchester Patch wants to know which is your favorite.
The Winchester School Committee is meeting tonight to discuss the redistricting plans. The meeting was moved to the Winchester High School auditorium and will start at 7:30 p.m. The revised map-based proposals from the Redistricting Advisory Committee as well as the alternative plans will be up for discussion. The RAC has five options for redistributing approximately 200 elementary school students between the schools in the next two years. Enrollment projections from the New England School Development Council helped in the development of these proposed models. The next Winchester School Committee meeting will be in the high school auditorium on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The Winchester School Committee moved its Thursday meeting from the Lynch School library to the Winchester High School auditorium. The meeting will still be at 7:30 p.m. If you aren't able to attend, you can view it live from WinCam on Verizon 38 or Comcast 22. The School Committee will continue the discussion of both the revised Redistricting Advisory Committee maps as well as the alternative plans. The community involvement in the redistricting discussion has been a great example of democracy in action, and we have been proud to be even a small part of this process. The superintendent and school committee members should be applauded for keeping their ears, minds, and hopefully their hearts open to ideas that may go beyond the normal paradigms of traditional redistricting exercises. The presentation of the 5 redistricting maps on Oct. 11 did little to reduce parents’ concerns around walkability, safety, fairness, and costs.
