School bells ring and children sing, “OMG, I’m a senior!” There will be pumpkin carving and football games for everyone else, but seniors are focusing on visiting potential schools, filling out applications, and writing application essays. The college application comprises several critical components, but the essay in particular has grown in significance as interviews have become less common, positioning the essay as one of the few opportunities to showcase your personality and add life to your application. It’s important to use the essay as a means to share information that cannot be found on other parts of the application. Writing an essay can seem like a daunting task. What to write about? Are dictators mad or do they just not know when to quit? Do they know that people hate them, or do they have personality disorders that block this knowledge from their consciousness? In Madmen At The Helm, while considering the geopolitical manipulations by outside forces, Muriel Mirak-Weissbach takes a unique perspective when she places the events of the Arab Spring in the context of personality disorders such as narcissism, paranoia, delusion, hysteria, and sociopathy, considering five Arab leaders (Mubarak, Qaddafi, Ben Ali, Saleh and Assad) in turn. A watershed in Arab history, the Arab spring gave young protesters the impetus to challenge established and entrenched dictatorial regimes for the first time, and to demand representative …

Tom Ryan will speak and sign copies of Following Atticus at Book Ends on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. He will be joined by Atticus. Book Ends is a dog friendly venue, but asks that attendees leave their own canines at home to keep the four-legged star calm. Following Atticus is the inspiring story of an out-of-shape newspaper man, Tom Ryan, and Atticus M. Finch, a miniature schnauzer, an unlikely pair of mountaineers. To pay tribute to a friend who died of cancer, they set out to climb all 48 of New Hampshire's 4,000 foot peaks, twice, in the 90 days of winter. The challenge of a lifetime awaits them in an enchanting but dangerous winter wonderland. Their remarkable story of endurance follows the two friends for hundreds of miles, but their …

Winchester's independent bookstore has taken some innovative steps to stay on top of its big-box competitors.
In the face of competition from big box bookstores and online sellers, Winchester’s independent bookstore, Book Ends, is still going strong after 24 years. “Being small does not mean smaller business but rather one that is concentrated on its customers,” said Book Ends owner Judy Manzo. She cites a core group of loyal customers as key to the store’s success. To keep them coming back, Book Ends offers personal service, frequent author appearances, book club lists and discounts and a children’s book reviewer program. At times, being an independent store even gives Book Ends an edge over chain stores. “Because we are a small store,” Manzo said, “we have been successful in having our finger on the pulse of what is going on in the industry and …

Book Ends hosted author, Andrew Rimas, along with chef Paul Turano of Tryst.
When civilizations become extinct, historians would do well to look at their food production and the eating habits of their citizens. That's part of the theme of the multi-layered Empires of Food: Feast, Famine and the Rise and Fall of Civilization by co-authors Evan D.C. Fraser and Andrew Rimas, editor of The Improper Bostonian. Rimas read from his book and discussed its implications with a group of listeners at Book Ends. Chef Paul Turano complemented Rimas' reading with appetizers from his restaurant Tryst in Arlington. "This book was a collaboration between me and my childhood friend Evan," explained Rimas. "When we worked on our previous book, Beef:The Untold Story of How Milk, Meat and Muscle Shaped the World, we focused on cultural…
