The MBTA is looking far and wide for a company to run its commuter rail service.
Before the T shells out billions on a new long-term, commuter-rail-service contract, it’s first spending nearly $3 million on an international search to attract the best applicants, according to the Boston Herald. The T is looking for a company to run its commuter-rail-service operations over the next five to possibly 30 years, as its current, roughly $250 million-per-year contract with the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. (MBCR) expires June 2013. MBCR plans to bid aggressively for the new deal, according to the Huffington Post. The company, which has been in place since 2003, has received some criticism during its tenure, primarily for weather-related delays. However, MBCR officials defended their record in January. Half of the …

Residents voiced their displeasure of having freight trains stopping in their neighborhood.
Even with the snow, Winchester residents showed up in force Thursday night at Town Hall to discuss the freight trains that are stopping the their neighborhood. According to Winchester resident Susan Busher, a railroad switch has been established by the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad (MBCR) at Cross Street at the request of Tighe Trucking, Inc. A railroad siding was also installed, allowing freight trains to come off the commuter rail for the delivery to the backside of Tighe Trucking at 45 Holton Street. Cynthia Scarano Executive Vice President of Pan Am Railways attended the meeting and informed residents that there is little her company can do because they are a common carrier. “We’re obligated to deliver to them because we’re a …

The Board of Selectmen do not want to see weekend service stopped.
Earlier this month, the MBTA announced that they are looking at increasing fares, while cutting services for buses and commuter rail. According to the state's transportation website, those cuts could include elimination of commuter rail services after 10 p.m. during the week and completely on the weekend. The Winchester Board of Selectmen did not agree with the proposed changes. “I hate to see the prices increase,” said Selectman Doug Marmon. “But I’m much more concerned about the cuts. I really want to stop that.” Under the proposal, there are two scenarios – the first would include a fare increase of 43 percent, and the second a spike of 35 percent. Both would mean cuts or eliminations to commuter rail services. For example, Winchester …

Winchester commuters could see a 52 percent increase.
If you rely heavily on public transportation out of Winchester, you'd better get ready for some changes. According to the state's transportation website, there are two MBTA scenarios for the near future and both would feature fare increases and cuts to services. Those cuts could include elimination of commuter rail services after 10 p.m. during the week and completely on the weekend. "While the MBTA continues to identify and adopt strict measures to close the budget gap, less costly ways of doing business and additional revenue-generating measures are necessary," said MassDOT Transportation Secretary and CEO Richard Davey. "I am confident with the public’s involvement in this process we can review the study, propose recommendations, and …

Freight trains will be making stops at Tighe Trucking at 45 Holton Street.
Freight trains will be stopping in Winchester to make deliveries at Tighe Trucking. Last week, Winchester residents showed up at the Board of Selectmen meeting to try and prevent the trains from stopping near their homes. But according to Acting Town Manager, Mary Ellen Lannon, the town has no authority to prevent the trains from stopping at the Holton Street business. “Based upon the documentation available, it was determined that Mr. Tighe was within his rights as a property owner to request the improvements be done to have freight deliveries to the industrial location on Holton Street,” Lannon said. According to Winchester resident Susan Busher, a railroad switch has been established by the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad (MBCR) at …

According to the Boston Herald, Winchester Police failed to break up a fight on the commuter rail on the night of Aug. 6.
The Winchester Police Department is currently conducting an internal investigation on four of its officers, according to the Boston Herald. The article states that on the night of Aug. 6, the commuter rail pulled into Wedgemere Station. The conductors requested help from the Winchester Police Department to break up a fight on the train. Four Winchester officers responded to the station, but according to the Herald, the officers failed to board the train to deal with the situation. “We’re troubled by the response of the Winchester Police Department to the Wedgemere Train Station on the night of August 6,” Winchester police Lt. Peter MacDonnell told Winchester Patch. “We’re particularly concerned that the officers apparently didn’t assist …
