Sheriff Koutoujian Moves a Step Closer to Run for Congress

The campaign committee called “Koutoujian for Congress” allows the candidate to raise money for a campaign and hire campaign staff.

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian announced Thursday that he is opening a Congressional campaign committee account. The move is a serious indication that Koutoujian will run for U.S. Congress if Congressman Edward Markey wins the U.S. Senate special election next month. Complete Election Results for Senate Primary in Winchester

Republican candidate Gabriel Gomez, a former Navy SEAL, and longtime Democratic Congressman Ed Markey will face off June 25 to fill John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat.

Following the state's lead, Republican Gabriel Gomez and Democrat Ed Markey garnered the most votes in Winchester in the U.S. Senate primary on Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the Town Clerk's office. Gomez, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, and Markey, a longtime Congressman, will square off June 25 to fill John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat. In Winchester, about 24.2 percent of the 14,454 registered voters eligible to vote in the Senate primary cast their ballots. As of 3 p.m., nearly 13.2 percent of the voters turned up at the polls. As of 3 p.m., more than 13 percent of the eligible registered voters had cast their ballots Tuesday during the U.S. Senate primary, according to Lannon. Of the 14,454 eligible registered voters in town, 1,907 had turned up at the polls, she added. When she went out to the polls at noon, Lannon described voter turnout as "slow and steady." Lannon is hopeful people will get off the commuter rail or come to the polls after work so "we can see a jump at the polls," she said. U.S. Senate Candidates Face Off in Debate Wednesday Night

The forum will feature Democratic and Republican challengers in Needham at WCVB.

Five candidates seeking the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by John Kerry will debate for the first time in one place Wednesday night in Needham. The two Democrats and three Republicans vying for the vacated position will face each other in two separate, 30-minute debates in an event sponsored by the Boston Media Consortium and held at the Channel 5 studios. Winchester Voters Elect Nixon, Verdicchio to School Committee

More than 2,000 registered voters in Winchester cast their ballots on election day Tuesday, according to preliminary results from the Town Clerk's office. Of the roughly 15,000 registered voters in Winchester, 2,039 voters made their way to the polls, representing about a 14 percent turnout, according to the data. In the School Committee race, incumbent Christian Nixon and challenger Susan Verdicchio were elected to three-year terms on the committee, beating Michael Galvin and Brian Vernaglia. Markey, Sullivan Leading New WBUR Senate Poll

Over 40 percent of likely voters in both primaries yet to make up their minds for the special election.

Congressman Edward Markey and former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan are leading their respective Democratic and Republican primary fields for the upcoming U.S. Senate special election, according to a new WBUR poll. Markey, a Malden Democrat, has an 11-point edge (35 percent to 24 percent) over fellow Congressman Stephen Lynch of South Boston. Markey represents Winchester. Sullivan, of Abington, leads the Republican candidates with 28 percent followed by Norfolk Rep. Dan Winslow at 10 percent and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset with 8 percent.
