Thanks Badger, I like that idea. I'll see if the engineers can do anything about that.

On the article Winchester Superintendent Discusses School Choice Option

Daniel Marra

Hi BAV,
I spoke with the Superintendent last night and he said that the number of people who choose this option will be made public. The deadline for choosing the option is Dec. 22, but parents have until the beginning of January to accept the change in schools.
Families can choose to opt in to school choice, but once they receive their new school, there's still an opportunity for them to back out. So once the numbers are finalized we'll have a story on that.
Thanks.

On the article Winchester Transfer Station Fees to Increase

Thanks for the comment Roger. I will definitely try and add a chart. It will be tough to compare with other towns because there are a lot of different categories, and a town like Needham that has a Transfer Station also has a pay-as-you-throw system. But I can put something together that shows the changing costs in Winchester.
I believe the rate for the mattresses/box springs, the couches/loveseats/upholstered chairs and the carpets are all new. And, according to Jay Gill, fees are being introduced for those items to cover the costs of disposing them.
And BAV, I have heard that argument before regarding garbage littering the sidewalks. The town should have a report on costs in the next month, so it should be interesting to see what they find.

Hi Marta,
Thanks for the comment, I'll see if I can find out why Winchester doesn't have a curbside pick-up.
I know the cost to eliminate the waste has been steadily increasing, which leads to an increase in the fees. According to the town, one way to lower that cost is to increase the recycling, which is why they're looking at a pay-as-you-throw program, among other things. But that program could be interesting because the new Town Manager, Richard Howard, instituted a pay-as-you-throw program while he was the Mayor of Malden.
