ReplyJT, really why cast a ballot when most of the seats are unchallenged? Instead of telling people to vote, we need more people to run for office. Both selectmen seats only had one person running.

On the article Winchester Faces Investigation Over School Redistricting

The motivation was shifting kids from the east side of Winchester to the west side, because there is a big new school in a part of town where not many kids live. Nobody wants to leave their school. I agree with Logic, I don't think they meant to discriminate but they were insensitive. I wonder if all the kids being moved from Muraco to Lynch will make the test scores go up at Lynch?

ReplyYou don't have a willful child if they will fall for those kinds of "choices" ;)

I don't think you can jump to conclusions. I left a comment on the previous letter that said the SC should absolutely own up to and correct the map mistake. I'm not affected by the redistricting but if you look at Kara Driscoll's previous comments it looks like she is (and her neighborhood is split three ways). People can be unhappy about the result (I am) but still be grateful that others in town are volunteering for this difficult job.
When my kids were little they redistricted Grove St. and people were also incensed and worried about property values. The first year was difficult at Ambrose. But now no-one wants to leave and I think the neighborhood would be mad to be moved back to Lincoln. House prices didn't fall. Many people either don't have kids or move to Winchester for the schools, not a specific school.

On the article Letter: School Committee Member Is Dishonest

ReplyIf you look at the new map, there is a strange area where 4 houses are "cut out" of one block and redistricted from Lincoln to Muraco while the other 3 houses on the exact same block (on the same side of the road, no cross streets) are redistricted from Lincoln to Lynch. It looks like a computer mistake and maybe all those houses were supposed to be Muraco (with their neighbors across the street) or Lynch (with the neighbors behind them). Hopefully the School Committee can fix this with an amendment and make a decision to send the entire block to either Lynch or Muraco. Redistricting is over, but if a mistake was made (which from the look of squiggle on the map seems likely) the School Committee needs to own up and make the map consistent for families in this area.
I agree that everyone involved has put hours of work into this and we need to be civil to each other and move on!

ReplyI never got a letter. They were sent to every Winchester resident? Really? When was this? As far as I know, people affected by the spring decision got a letter, but so far nothing to the extra people affected by the fall decision.

ReplyThe other problem is that the neighborhoods affected were not notified. Many people are under the impression that the spring maps were the ones being considered, and did not realize that other neighborhoods were added to Map 1. I've had a few people say to me "I checked the maps, I'm not affected by any of them" when in fact they have been redistricted. It's ridiculous they weren't notified.

I have noticed that it has been much easier to find parking spots downtown in the last few weeks. I didn't know it was because of this rule change, but if so it seems like a good change. I hope they work out the commenters problems above because having more parking spots free makes it so much easier to go to local businesses. In the past I've driven around looking for parking and given up then driven to Target instead!
